This artwork belongs to the best period of Mignon from about 1910 when the artist succeeds an impressive fluid brush stroke.

First pupil of Auguste Renoir, he became one of his closest confidants in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1907 until Renoir's death in 1919.
At Renoir's invitation, Mignon lived and worked in Les Collettes, a country house with a large garden in Cagnes near Nice.

Mignon was a figure, landscape and still life painter in oil and pastel. He described his own painting style as "Allier la couleur des Impressionistes au dessin d`Ingres".
The art history appropriately describes the corresponding period of Renoir as "ingresque".

Encyclopedia Bénézit writes: In this "ingresque" period of Renoir, Mignon's work is most similar to that of his famous friend.

Artist dictionaries: Thieme-Becker, Saur, Bénézit.
Artworks in public collections: Musée du Luxembourg, Paris; Musées des Beaux-arts of Angers and Laval.
