The landscape under bright blue sky is in the overall composition of an artist committed to realism. However Vollon was an unusually courageous painter who always wanted to go beyond the imaging representation.

In the execution of the field and the haystacks the impressionist tendencies of Vollon are recognizable. Accordingly, he describes the sun in the sky in its effect; representing a small yellow bundle of rays analogous to the haystacks,


While still lifes by Vollon are not seldom, landscapes are valuable rarities on art market.


Lyon born Antoine Vollon first received artistic training at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in his hometown. He then went to Paris and trained under Augustin Théodule Ribot.

In 1864 Vollon was debuting with a still life in occasion of the great exhibition of the Paris Salon. In his early work Vollon's themes consisted mostly of still lifes and kitchen interiors, later continuing with landscapes and views of Paris and other cities.

In his time he was considered the most important still life painter in France, so he was christened 'the Chardin of the nineteenth century'.

As a friend of Daubigny, Corot and Boudin his work was championed by prominent critics such as Jules Castagnary and Edmond Renoir (the brother of the Impressionist Auguste Renoir).

The writer Alexandre Dumas acquired a considerable number of drawings and paintings. In the United States the collector Henry Clay Frick in New York, Potter Palmer in Chicago and Erwin Davis of New York and Paris were his customers.

The American Impressionist William Merritt Chase, whose technical bravura has much in common with that of Vollon, acquired a total of no less than twenty works of his fellow painter.

Vollon was an active participant in the Paris Salon for over thirty years and received a number of prestigious awards. He was an honoured knight of the Legion of Honor and in 1897 became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts.

On August 27, 1900 Antoine Vollon died in Paris at the age of 66.

After his death he was likely associated with the traditionalists. In our time we see the exceptional effect he creates which gives the viewer a completely new way of looking at objects and the nature.

Ever since the comprehensive retrospective of the New York Wildenstein Gallery involving large museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, his works are again in the front rows of exhibitions and publications.

Characteristic of the work of Vollon is the use of color accents and the representation of moods by variations of light and shade.

But above all, the artist distinguishes himself with a sweeping, fluid stroke technique from which the haptic technique is directly designed.

Critics of our time recognize the artist as follows:
'At his best, he was a master of the paint medium, slathering on pigment in quick Manet-like strokes and working it with his fingers, hands, nails, brush handle and anything else around.' (Grace Glueck, The New York Times, December 24, 2004)
