Paul Léon Félix Schmitt

1856 - Paris - 1902

Signed lower right

Oil on canvas, 13 x 16.1 in., 33 x 41 cm

The paricular manner in painting of Schmitt is best described by Cabanne:

" a (typical) pupil of Guillemet who creates his landscapes in semi-tones, with subtle lighting he comes close to the artworks of Corot and Boudin."

This painting fits that description totally. A clay coloring is used. The atmospheric effect is caused by fine distinctions and individual luminosity.

View of the famous chalk cliffs of Etretat. In the foreshortening but just still visible is the striking rock arch called Porte d'Aval.

Artists dictionaries: Thieme-Becker, Bénézit; Schurr-Cabanne
