Because of its themes and the unique joy in his colors and shapes Lebasque was admired. In art history, Henri Lebasque is called "the painter of joy and light."
After his studies he joined the studio of Bonnat. He also maintains an intensive exchange with young painters such as Vuillard and Bonnard, the founders of the artists' association "Nabi" and "Intimists."
In 1903 he founded, together with Matisse and other artists the Salon d'Automne.
The first retrospective of his work is presented only twenty years after his death at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice.
Artworks of Lebasque are in most French museums and in the most important international public collections.
